Most vehicles operate within a normal engine temperature range of approximately 90 to 105 degrees Celsius. When the temperature gauge climbs significantly above that range, it's a warning that something in the cooling system needs immediate attention. What Causes a Car to Overheat?
Cooling system leak. The radiator, hoses, water pump, head gasket, and thermostat housing are all potential leak points. When coolant escapes the system, there isn't enough fluid to absorb and carry heat away from the engine. Coolant loss is often gradual — you may not notice a puddle under the vehicle before the temperature gauge tells you something is wrong.
Coolant problems. Even with the right coolant level, the wrong type of coolant or an incorrect coolant-to-water ratio (the correct mix is typically 50/50) can reduce the fluid's ability to manage engine temperature. Degraded coolant that hasn't been flushed on schedule loses its corrosion-inhibiting and heat-transfer properties over time, compounding the problem.
Coolant hose blockage. Dirt and debris can accumulate inside the cooling system over time, creating restrictions in the coolant hoses that slow or stop flow. A blocked hose reduces the system's ability to circulate coolant through the engine even when the fluid level is correct.
Radiator issues. The radiator dissipates heat from the coolant before it recirculates back through the engine. Blockages, leaks, or a malfunctioning radiator fan, which is responsible for airflow when the vehicle is stationary or moving slowly, can all prevent the radiator from doing its job effectively.
Faulty water pump: The water pump is responsible for circulating coolant throughout the entire cooling system. A worn impeller, a shifted pump shaft, or a seal leak can reduce or stop coolant flow entirely, causing the engine temperature to rise quickly.
What the Warning Signs Mean
Your vehicle usually gives warning before serious overheating damage occurs. Watch for:
- Temperature gauge rising above the normal range
- Steam from under the hood, meaning the coolant is boiling over, typically from a leak or blockage
- Sweet smell from the engine bay, which is a characteristic sign of coolant escaping the system
- Ticking or knocking sounds are oil losing viscosity under extreme heat, increasing friction between engine components
- Reduced engine performance is a sign from modern vehicles may reduce power automatically to protect the engine when overheating is detected
Any of these signs warrants pulling over immediately. Continuing to drive through an overheating event, even for a short distance, is one of the fastest ways to turn a cooling system repair into a full engine replacement.
What to Do If Your Car Overheats While Driving
Turn off the air conditioning immediately and switch the heat to maximum. It sounds counterintuitive, but the cabin heater draws heat away from the engine and into the passenger compartment, reducing the thermal load on the cooling system while you find a safe place to stop.
Pull over as soon as it's safe to do so and shut off the engine. Do not attempt to open the hood for at least 15 to 30 minutes. Coolant under pressure is extremely hot and can cause serious burns if the radiator cap is opened prematurely.
Do not add cold water to a hot engine. The sudden temperature change can crack engine components. Wait until the engine has cooled completely before checking the coolant reservoir.
Have the vehicle towed rather than attempting to drive it further. A tow is significantly less expensive than the engine damage that can result from continuing to drive an overheating vehicle, even for a short distance.
Once the engine has cooled completely, check the coolant reservoir. If it's low, top it up carefully before driving, but book a service appointment regardless. Low coolant is a symptom, not a cause, and the underlying source of the loss needs to be identified and repaired.
